The Omani foreign ministry statement did not identify the individuals released, but Belgium says aid worker Olivier Vankastel was included in the deal.

Iran and Belgium agreed to release detainees in the two countries, in a deal facilitated by Oman.

The Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, in a statement, on Friday, that the people were transferred from Tehran and Brussels to Muscat, in preparation for their return to their countries. It did not specify the identity of the prisoners being exchanged.

However, Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre de Croo said in a statement that aid worker Olivier Vandecastel had been released.

Iranian state media repeated Amman’s announcement, without providing further details. Iran wanted Belgium to return a diplomat convicted of plotting a bombing in France.

This is an urgent story. More to track.
